Současný výzkum magnólií (nebo-li šácholanů), které vykazují mnoho zajímavých biologických vlastností, přináší především zásadní otázky vymezení samotného rodu. V Evropě se rod Magnolia vyskytuje již od třetihor a čítá asi 120 až 130 druhů. Většina z nich roste v temperátním a tropickém pásu jihovýchodní Asie, zbylé druhy v oblasti Nového světa. V ČR jsou více známí zástupci podrodu Yulania kvetoucí před olistěním.

Magnolias are distinguished by their many interesting biological features. Current research raises basic questions as to the definition of the genus itself. In Europe, the genus Magnolia has grown since the Tertiary Period and it consists of about 120-130 species. The majority of Magnolia species grow in the temperate and tropical zones of south-eastern Asia, while other species grow in the New World. In the Czech Republic, it is representatives of the sub-genus Yulania which are most common, flowering before their leaves bud.
