The main task of the department is the archaeological management of National Cultural Monument – Prague Castle. This involves the protection of the archaeological sites, the archaeological rescue excavation of areas threatened with destruction and making the results accessible to the professional and general public. An integral part of this work is also the management of the large store of finds accumulated from excavations undertaken since 1925.

The department staff also carries out archaeological rescue operations in the immediate surroundings of the castle (Hradčany and Střešovice areas in Prague) and at some other important sites in Bohemia (Levý Hradec, Chrudim, Kutná Hora).
