| 19.30 – 20.30 | večerní přednáška Chris Green (University of Oxford) It’s complicated: mapping and understanding 2,500 years of English archaeology Landscape and Identities: the Case of the English Landscape (EngLaId) was an ERC-funded project that ran from 2011 until 2016. It was based around the gathering and analysis of legacy data for all of England covering the period from the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500 BC) to the Domesday Book of AD 1086. That time period encompassed the middle and later Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the period of Roman occupation, and the early medieval period (including the migrations / invasions of Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, and finally the Normans). The project involved the gathering of an immense amount of data (over 900,000 records of sites or findspots) from a large number of local, regional, and national repositories. The paper will discuss the data processing tasks and workflows developed to collate rationalise, and attempt to understand this material, including thoughts on Big Data in archaeology. |
