Specialises in archaeology of the Early Middle Ages, particularly economic and social issues, settlement-related archaeological research of the Great Moravian centres, paleoecology and floodplain development. He is the head of research at the Great Moravian hillfort in Mikulčice. 
 
After graduating from the University of Brno, he worked from 1986 to 1988 as an archaeologist for the Museum of Western Moravia in Třebíč and then joined the Institute of Archaeology in Brno, where he now works as a researcher and since 1993 has headed the research base in Mikulčice. He manages the Editorial Board of the publication series Studien zum Burgwall von Mikulčice and Internationale Tagungen in Mikulčice, has prepared a permanent exhibition entitled "Great Moravian Mikulčice" at Slavic hillfort in Mikulčice, a national cultural monument, and is the author of more than a hundred specialised articles and publications.
