cordially invite you to the
XIV. Protohistoric Conference
Archaeology of the Barbarians 2018
which will be held
in Brno on 3–5 October, 2018.
The key topic of the international conference will be:
“Weapons and their bearers”
Objects of military or martial nature count among basic categories of artefacts in
protohistoric archaeology. Celtic, Roman or Germanic weapons and armour represent a topic, which is
present in many aspects of archaeological research. The widely conceived conference topic enables
to look at the problem from the aspect of quantitative and qualitative parameters of various forms
of militaria, and reflect the evidence of their find contexts regarding either social aspects
(exemplified by warrior graves) or possible places with high concentration of soldiers and warriors
(e.g. camps) or military conflicts and battles. Militaria also occur with increasing intensity in
collections of finds gathered from the ground surface and modify thereby in many regards the
deep-rooted conceptions of distribution territories of individual forms. From an interdisciplinary
point of view, the effects and use of weapons can, for example, be studied on anthropological
material. The aim of the conference is to outline the current state of research on weapons and
armour in protohistoric archaeology of the Central European Barbaricum, using the examples of
individual forms, localities, regions or various cultural groups.
This year’s conference has a clearly defined thematic focus. The organisers therefore strive
to include at least one invited thematic lecture in the conference programme.
The conference will of course again feature the regular section “Varia”, which introduces new
results of excavations or projects or new findings.
The outcome of the conference will be a thematic collected volume of presented papers “
Archeologie barbarů 2018”.
