Do we feel at home in Czech?

Among significant public-directed activities of the Institute of the Czech Language of the ASCR is its most significant one since the institute was founded. Its Language Culture Department is the only institution in the Czech Republic that continuously provides language counseling and advice to all Czech language users.
Modern technologies have recently brought a new dimension of communication between the public and the language consulting center. During the period 1998–2010, more than 71,500 e-mail language enquiries were received and answered. These enquiries, comments and requests provide an important input both for research and a continuing extension of the consulting center’s web page, especially the Enquiry of the Week section which was updated weekly with enquiries and answers from 2006–2010. The book, Do we feel at home in Czech? contains selected “enquiries of the week.” Most answers have been extended for the book. The most interesting and topical inquiries were received during five years of rich correspondence between the consulting center and the public, plus additional inquiries.
Academic Vade Mecum of the Czech Language is a printed version of the internet language reference book (ILRB). This book is the first Czech language reference source of its kind. It was made possible by a grant to the Language Counselling Service on the Internet completed from 2004–2008. The web page http://prirucka.ujc.cas.cz has so far been visited by more then million Czech language users and is also the most frequently visited webpage of the ASCR. In 2009, ILRB was awarded the first class medal “For improving the mother tongue learning conditions at all types of schools” by the Ministry of Education.
