Studies on populism seem to continue. This phenomenon that political science and social sciences have long considered a false problem is perhaps the most discussed political category in recent years. From being a typical phenomenon of the less advanced democracies, such as the American ones of the last century, it has instead become a main characteristic of the more stable western democracies. After Brexit and Trump, democratic politics is essentially populist. In fact, there is talk of a global populism that now determines the lives of citizens around the world, in different political contexts.
From the first studies of Gino Germani to the most recent of Carlos de la Torre, political sociology has provided important keys to reading the social conditions that generate populism, highlighting the profound transformations that affect democratic institutions.
Manuel Anselmi is a senior researcher at Charles University. He has written a book Populism. An Introduction. Previously he was involved in Latin American populisms, particularly in the case of Venezuela. He coordinates with Paul Blokker a network of studies on international populism. He recently participated in the Handbook of Global Populism, by Carlos de la Torre.
