Developments in Long-Wavelength VCSELs for Telecommunications and Sensing Applications

Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Department of Spectroscopy

Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures, EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland

ABSTRACT

Long wavelength (1200-2000nm) vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are the diode laser of choice for many applications requiring low power-consumption, single frequency emission spectrum, broad wavelength tenability, and symmetric beam shapes. These include optical fiber communication, spectroscopy and sensing. The major difficulty in the technological development of these lasers has been the incompatibility of the optimal laser gain material (InP-based) and mirror material (GaAs-based) in terms of epitaxial growth. This talk will review progress in the use of wafer fusion in fabricating such long wavelength VCSELs. The lasing characteristics of these devices, relevant to their applications in gas sensing, will be presented and discussed.

b) The five days seminar has been focused, as well as the previous very successful seminar, on the detection of standard gases in the 1.3 µm spectral range (especially for the detection of hydrogen fluoride). A new laser current power supply developed at the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry has been tested and used for tunning of the spectra. The first high resolution measurement together with the high sensitive lock-in amplifier detection technique has been performed in the spectral range of VCSE lasers (1.3 µm)  (28th October - 1st November).

Applications

Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Department of Spectroscopy

Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures, EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland

ABSTRACT

Incorporation of semiconductor quantum dots into nanophotonic elements requires requires precise spatial and spectral matching between the quantum dots and the optical modes concerned. We review recent progress towards such integration with epitaxial growth on patterned substrates. Applications in ultra-low power lasers and sources of single- and entangled photons are presented and discussed.
