Ahoj, Hello: Similarities and Differences in the Cultures of the USA and Czech Republic

7. 3. 2019
14:30, cabinet in Institute of Art History, Husova 4, Prague 1

The Institute of Sociology CAS and the Institute of Scoiological Studies of the Faculty of Social Scences of the Charles University, introduce the spring round of Thursday sociological semminars.

This presentation will make use of examples (e.g., facts, images, text) to help attendees apply what they know about culture to compare and contrast the lived experiences of citizens in North America and the Czech Republic. Rather than a research presentation, the goal is to exercise the sociological imagination by sharing and evaluating what we know about the cultures of these two nations. We will discuss the effects of capitalism, consumerism, history, and technologies in an effort to build a fun and engaging dialogue about culture.

Dr. Angel Hoekstra is an American, a mom, a teacher, and a sociologist trained in pedagogy. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at the University of Colorado.  Dr. Hoekstra moved with her husband and children to Prague two years ago and teaches a Social Psychology course at Charles University.

Seminar will be held in English. No registration is needed.
