Cathepsin Proteases in PathologyCathepsin research is one of the most progressive topics in the proteolysis field due to the broad and critical involvement of these enzymes in serious human pathologies. These include invasive cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative and immune diseases. Most recently, cathepsin-like proteases of invertebrates have emerged as a new development in the field. These proteases are critical for the metabolism and performance of a number of important parasites and pests. Our research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cathepsin-mediated pathological processes and their regulation. Emphasis is placed on biochemistry and proteomics of cathepsins as well as designing cathepsin inhibitors as a tool for intervention strategies.
