The Materials, Technologies and Methods for Long-term Preservation of Tangible Cultural Heritage research programme is divided into three work packages, which take into account the specifics of the unique built infrastructure:

  1. Modelling the behaviour of historic and modern materials and structures under the joint action of a range of climatic factors.
  2. A study of the lifetime and degradation processes in construction materials and their surface treatment by means of advanced experimental methods.
  3. Materials, technologies and methods for achieving long-term sustainability of monuments.
 
 
Research programme outputs
The outputs include developing and verifying methods for characterizing technical, mostly historic materials, for discovering and controlling the deformation and degradation processes in these materials, methods for estimating and extending the lifetime of cultural heritage objects, preserving and protecting cultural heritage objects by means of suitable conservation materials, procedures and technologies for restoration interventions that are compatible with the values of the monument and that take into account the new findings on the degradation mechanisms of historic materials under the influence of external stress and  environmental factors. Special attention will be paid to analyses of historic materials and technologies, and to identifying ways to reintroduce them into monument construction practice and into broader applications.
The built infrastructure serves as the workplace in which the research team will work on three interlinked long-term work packages.
