On Wednesday, May 29, the President of the Czech Academy of Sciences Eva Zažímalová visited one of the most significant scientific institutions in the world – CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland. The Czech expedition, attended also by the CAS Vice President Zdeněk Havlas and the CAS Academy Council Chair Antonín Fejfar, was guided by the CAS Vice President Jan Řídký, who had worked at CERN for three years.

An event called “An Open Day Not Only for Industrial Partners” was held on May 23, 2019 at the Institute of Physics of Materials (IPM) of the Czech Academy of Sciences. This successful meeting, supported by the Strategy AV21, was attended by representatives of industrial companies and research organisations from all over the Czech Republic.

Antonín Fejfar - who is the member of the Academic Council and the Deputy Director of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences – spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. He gave a presentation on the mission of the Academy of Sciences in Czech science and education as a whole at a two-day conference entitled “Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development” (STI Forum) on the 14th and 15th of May.

Nature Index, compiled under patronage of the Nature magazine, monitors the count of high-quality outputs in selected science journals. In the recently published list of articles from the area of biomedical sciences, the Czech Academy of Sciences has reached 13th place in the worldwide category of government institutions, gaining the best position from all such institutions in Central and Eastern Europe.

Originals of scientific illustrations of books from the 17th century, borrowed from various institutions including the Ritman Library in Amsterdam known as Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica, are presented at the latest exhibition in the Gallery of Science and Art at the headquarters of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The opening for public, attended by the CAS Vice-Chair Pavel Baran, took place on Tuesday, May 13.

A novel method for separating rare earth elements, developed at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB) of the CAS, will make the production of radiopharmaceuticals faster and easier. IOCB has entered into an intellectual property license agreement with SHINE Medical Technologies, providing the American company an exclusive license to this method. SHINE will use the innovation to produce lutetium-177 (Lu-177) for treatment of cancer.

On Tuesday, May 14, Rosaura Leonora Rueda Gutierrez, the ambassador of United Mexican States, visited the Czech Academy of Sciences. With representatives of the CAS she discussed the possibilities of further development of scientific cooperation between both countries.

The first four institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences have entered the select group of scientific centres and universities distinguished with the prestigious international HR Excellence in Research Award. The European Commission awards this certificate to institutes that significantly contribute to improvement of strategy of human resources, guaranteeing professional and ethical work conditions.
