Encyclopaedia

Work on encyclopaedias are among the major team projects of the Institute of Art History. The first Encyklopedie českého výtvarného umění [Encyclopaedia of Czech Visual Art] was published in 1975 under the editorship of Emanuel Poche. It has since been updated in a two-volume Nová encyklopedie českého výtvarného umění [New Encyclopaedia of Czech Visual Art] and a single-volume Dodatky [Supplement]. The new encyclopaedia includes entries from prehistoric times up to the present, although the editor has placed an emphasis on artists from the twentieth century, especially those who are still living. Czech artists living in exile are also represented to some extent. The supplement has expanded the encyclopaedia to include, in particular, entries on institutions and some specialised fields (such as restoration, industrial design, and scenery design). A Slovník historiků umění [Dictionary of Art historians] is currently being prepared.
