Přírodní látky ze skupiny alkaloidů, nověji spíše biogenních aminů - teobromin, teofylin a kofein - se vyskytují v cévnatých léčivých rostlinách Starého i Nového světa vesměs pohromadě. Na lidský organismus působí jako psychomotorické stimulans. Rodů matečných rostlin je 6 (kávovníky, čajovníky, kolovníky, kakaovníky, cesmíny a paullinie) a zahrnují řadu druhů, jejich kříženců a taxonů na úrovni kultivarů. Kofeinové drogy sice nepřestaly mít terapeutické využití, ale mezi strategické farmaceutické suroviny již nepatří.
