Abstract:

Many structural elements loaded by wind like bridge hangers have nominally the cylindrical shape. Change of the shape significantly influences the airflow regime as well as alters the aerodynamic properties. This project is concerned with the aerodynamics and aeroelasticity of a circular cylinder with various type of the surface roughness, which arises due to climatic or technological conditions as, e.g., ice accretion or permanent defect created during the production or lifetime. Principal scientific contribution will be investigation of the flow characteristics near the surface of cylinders with modified roughness as well as determination of aerodynamic and aeroelastic load and response in turbulent flow at the critical and transition regimes of Reynolds number. The anticipated contributions are expected in understanding fundamental knowledge in the theory of boundary layer and physical phenomena of self- induced oscillations, in practical structural engineering applications, and in codification of important structural elements.
