The aim of the project is to implement the international stardard for data documentation called Data Documentation Initiative (DDI), to apply NESSTAR tecnology in Sociological Data Archive (SDA) of the Institute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and to extend the integration of the Czech archive into international networks, mainly into the European network CESSDA.
The implementation of the DDI standard and the NESSTAR technology:
- will improve the present technologies of digital data archiving at SDA, especially it will guarantee long-term compatibility of the data and documentation format in accordance with modern software development and also it will develop the secure data uploading;
- will bring the international compatibility to Czech data services and will enable their convenient integration into the international data exchange systems, it will simplify and improve the access to SDA data;
- will promote the standard of the data documentation and enable the analysis of the archived data through the internet, it will connect the data catalogue and the data services of SDA with the international archives and facilitate the direct access to the international data;
- will help to keep step with main trends of the modern development and open the road to application of the other new technologies based on DDI standard, it will also enable the participation of the Czech archive in the international development projects.
The international standard of data documentations DDI is the organised structure of the metadata (datat documentation) in XML format. Among the main advantages of this standard are the resistance to software format development, which is essential for effective long-term archiving, the new opportunities for processing and linking together of all stored information, the international compatibility and the compatibility with the modern technologies of data administrations, management and analysis in social sciences.
NESSTAR (Networked Social Science Tools and Resources) allows an on-line control of the access to the data provided to the different types of users; it enables searching in the data sets and documentation and on-line analysis of the data, including graphical outputs; besides, it combines more sources of information and provides the users with the possibility to upload the primary data files. The system connects several data libraries and enables the linking of the different data archive services.

In the area of international comparative research social data archives have an important role in both, dissemination of survey data and participation in organisation of surveys. Common European networked data infrastructure is desired tool, which would provide more efficient services in this respect. Several projects (DDI, NESSTAR, MADIERA, etc.) have accomplished significant progress.
The report on Czech participation in international comparative socio-economic survey research is aimed at providing information on sources of data available for secondary analysis in sociology. The author informs on multinational continuous survey programs with public domain databases including Czech data and selection of projects in other areas (e.g. one-time international surveys, surveys from before 1989, comparative official statistics, events data, etc.).
A low response rate is regarded as one of the main sources of variable variance and bias in mass survey estimates. There is a consensus among scholars and pollsters that response-rate trends have been declining, and that this fact poses one of the most serious problems affecting contemporary quantitative social science research. Since the mid-1990s there has been a dramatic decline in the response rates also of sample surveys conducted in the Czech Republic.
Non-response rates among Czech respondents in surveys between 1995 and 2005 were almost twice the rate between 1991 and 1995. Such trends point to a decline in the “survey climate.” While non-contacts and refusals are a significant problem, issues relating to how fieldwork is undertaken are equally important. The large fluctuations in non-contacts and the relative success of the Czech Statistical Office and the ESS II.
The aim of the article is to inform about archiving of sociological data. The article deals with this topic in several ways. The first is a meaning of data archiving for scientific work and place of it in „ the data life cycle“. Folloving part concentrates on how to prepare data for archivation. The last part is about DDI standard, which is tool for describing (not only) sociological data.
The article offers an attempt to describe the debate on the concept of attitude in the social sciences and of possibilities of its measurement. Emphasis is paid to the critique of classic conception of attitude from Pierre Bourdieu and the discursive psychologists.
The article introduces the reader to the functioning of the MEDARD qualitative data archive within Sociological Data Archive. Presented are elementary information and services provided by the archive for researchers in the field of qualitative research.
The article focuses on the archiving and sharing of qualitative data from the general point of view. The text discusses the whole idea and concept of archivation. Of particular interest in the discussion are methodological, ethical and legislative aspects of archiving and sharing of qualitative data.
Based on data from the European Social Survey 2002, this chapter compares attitudes towards immigration across European countries. Using aggregated data about numbers and structure of immigrants in European countries and indicators of country’s economic situation, this chapter looks at the question whether attitudes towards immigration are related to country-level characteristics.
