Project: Troposphere-ionosphere coupling and its impact on ionospheric variability

Wave activity of tropospheric origin has an appreciable impact on the ionospheric variability (~30%). However it has little been studied compared to this of space weather and consequently is still not incorporated adequately into ionospheric models. The aim of the project is to investigate dynamics of the AGW mainly of meteorological origin above different locations and under different topographic conditions and their effects on ionosphere using data from Doppler sounder in combination with data from collocated microbarographs, GPS receiver and ionosonde. The results will deepen our knowledge of coupling of the lower atmosphere into the ionosphere and enable to estimate contribution of gravity waves of different origin to energy balance of the thermosphere and ionosphere. We obtain useful information for the HF radiowave ionospheric channel studies. The proposed synergy of similar instrumentation networks installed at different locations allows us to obtain new and more complex information on the AGW activity forcing of the ionosphere from below usable also in ionospheric models.
