International conference “Africa in a Polycentric World: The African Youth and Civil Society”

The international conference addresses the topic of the African youth engaged in the civil society activities, with regard to the fact that young people constitute 60% of African population. It will focus on the place and role of the youth in the African society, particularly on their relation to power and politics.
The conference is another series of the "Asixoxe: Conference on African Philosophy" which is organized together by Centre of Global Studies at the Institute of Philosophy CAS in Prague and SOAS, London University.

Mezinárodní konference „Afrika v polycentrickém světě: Africká mládež a občanská společnost“

Mezinárodní konference se soustředí na téma africké mládeže zapojené do aktivit občanské společnosti, s vědomím faktu, že mladí lidé dnes v Africe představují 60 % populace. Zaměří se na skupiny africké mládeže v občanské společnosti, které usilují o odstraňování násilí v transnacionálních souvislostech na africkém kontinentu, jenž trpí chronickou stagnací a opakovanými ozbrojenými konflikty. Bude se věnovat místu a roli mládeže v africké občanské společnosti, především jejich vztah k moci a politice a také k jejich strategiím jednání.
Konference je dalším dílem série „Asixoxe: Conference on African Philosophy", kterou organizuje Centrum globálních studií Filosofického ústavu Akademie věd ČR ve spolupráci se SOAS, London University.

Islamic Law in Modern Muslim states
In Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as the name of the country suggests, Islamic law plays a significant role in every sphere of life. Why Islamic law is so significant in Pakistan? Is Pakistani law, which is based on Islamic law, compatible with modern notions of human rights? How does Pakistan implement obligations stipulated in modern international instruments? These are some of the questions that will be discussed by the speaker.
Syed Imad-ud-Din Asad has an LL.M. from the Harvard Law School; he is a member of the Lahore High Court Bar Association; he is the founding director of the UMT School of Law and Policy, where he is also an associate professor; he is a Visiting Professor at the KU Leuven; he is the first elected member from Pakistan of the International Academy of Comparative Law. His research interests include Islamic law, Islamic finance, securities, health law, and education law. His teaching interests include Islamic law, Islamic finance, international trade, and negotiation. He is working in Pakistan in order to improve the existing system of legal education in the country.

Mezinárodní workshop se zaměří na vzestup kastovních a náboženských rozdílů a možnosti sekulárního jazyka v současné Indii. Bude zkoumat, jak v současné indické politice přetrvávají předmoderní identity jako kasta a komunita se zvláštním důrazem na vzestup dalitského hnutí, a jejich důsledky pro všeobecné volby do Sněmovny lidu, které se konají v dubnu a květnu 2019.
Workshop pořádají Sociologický ústav AV ČR, Centrum globálních studií Filosofického ústavu AV ČR a Institut für die Wissenschaften ve Vídni v rámci výzkumného programu „Globální konflikty a lokální souvislosti" Strategie AV21.

Sociology seminar on antipoverty programs in Brazil

The lecture The largest antipoverty social program in the world: Effects of a conditional cash transfer program on its participants in Brazil will focus on the main ideas of Prof. Alessandro Pinzani's new book "Money, Autonomy and Citizenship" (Springer 2018) which he wrote together with a Brazilian sociologist Prof. Walquiria Leao Rego. The book analyzes the impacts of the largest antipoverty social program in the world on peoples' lives: the Brazilian Bolsa Família Program. Created by the government of former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, this program of civic inclusion has been the largest conditional cash transfer program in the world during that time period, serving more than 50 million Brazilians who had a monthly per capita income of less than USD 50. The program is regarded as one of the key factors behind the significant poverty reduction in Brazil experienced during the first decade of the 21st century.
Alessandro Pinzani is Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil (since 2004). This semester, he is a Guest Professor at the Centre of Global Studies in Prague. He earned his Ph.D. at the Universität Tübingen in Germany. He was Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York, at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, at the PUC-RS in Porto Alegre in Brazil, and at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, for example. He focuses on autonomy of individuals, poverty and social programs in Brazil and Latin America.
Seminar will be held in English. No registration is needed.

Prof. Alessandro Pinzani v přednášce The largest antipoverty social program in the world: Effects of a conditional cash transfer program on its participants in Brazil představí hlavní myšlenky své nové knihy „Money, Autonomy and Citizenship" (Springer 2018), kterou napsal společně s brazilskou socioložkou Walquiria Leao Rego. Kniha analyzuje dopady největšího světového programu na vymýcení chudoby: brazilský Bolsa Família Program. Zavedl jej bývalý brazilský prezident Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a jeho vláda a tento program občanské inkluze se postupně stal největším programem podmíněných sociálních dávek na světě, který pomohl více než 50 milionům Brazilců s menším měsíčním příjmem než 50 amerických dolarů. Program je považován za jeden z klíčových faktorů za významným sníženám chudoby, k němuž došlo v Brazílii během prvního desetiletí 21. století.
Alessandro Pinzani je od roku 2004 profesorem na Federální univerzitě v Santa Catarina v Brazílii. V tomto semestru působí jako hostující profesor na Centru globálních studií v Praze. Získal Ph.D. na univerzitě v Tübingen v Německu, působil jako hostující vědec například na Columbia University v New Yorku, na Humboldtově univerzitě v Berlíně, na PUC-RS v Porto Alegre v Brazílii a na Ruhr-Universität v Bochumi. Zaměřuje se na autonomii jedinců, chudobu a sociální programy v Brazílii a Latinské Americe.
Seminář bude probíhat v angličtině. Registrace není nutná.
