Ve všech kulturách i časech přitahoval kvesal chocholatý (Pharomachrus mocinno) pozornost svým vzhledem, nádherně zářivým smaragdovým zabarvením, karmínově rudou náprsenkou, zlatou chocholkou na hlavě a dlouhou vlající ocasní vlečkou. Studium tohoto unikátního neotropického ptačího druhu přinesla v posledních letech nové zajímavé poznatky o jeho chování, reprodukci, stravě a hlasovém projevu. Kvesal chocholatý patří mezi nejohroženější druhy trogonovitých což souvisí též s ubýváním horských mlžných pralesů, které jsou jeho domovem.

Across cultures and time the Resplendent Quetzal of Trogonidae species has attracted attention to its appearance, brilliantly glowing emerald-colored, carmine red breast, golden crest on its head and long and flowing uppertail coverts. The study of this unique neotropical bird species in recent years has revealed interesting new facts about its behaviour, reproduction, food and vocalisations. The Resplendent Quetzal is one of the most endangered species of Trogonidae, which is also linked to the disappearance of the tropical cloud forests which are its home.
