Renowned Dr. Vratislav Kafka passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday, September 1.

Dr. Kafka worked for the ITAM AS CR
since 1953, when he earned MSc from Czech Technical University in Prague. During first years at
ITAM he completed the thesis "Theory of elasticity of multilayered continua" (1957) under
supervision of Prof. V. Tesař. In 1981 he earned the highest degree "Doctor of Sciences" from
the Czech Academy of Sciences for his thesis "The general theory of elastoplastic deformation of
quasihomogeneous material based on analysis of internal microscopic stress".
His work was devoted to material research, namely in applications in biomechanics.
Vratislav Kafka was awarded by the Prize of the Czech Academy of Sciences (1976 and 1992),
Silver medal of St. Bechyně for contribution to technical sicences (1989), Medal of the Czech
Socienty for Mechanics "For contribution to mechanics" and by the The Ernst Mach Honorary Medal for
Merit in the Physical Sciences (2009).
