Education

Beside research itself, scientists at the Institute of Molecular Genetics are engaged in education and training of students, starting from Bachelor studies. In each research group, several students learn experimental techniques and methodology of scientific work under the supervision of experienced researchers while preparing their diploma or PhD thesis. A number of scientists also lecture at the universities, often without financial compensation.

The PhD programme at the Institute of Molecular Genetics (IMG) is part of a joint biomedical PhD programme organized by Charles University and several institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Individual PhD programmes focus on specific topics (e.g. immunology, cell biology, etc.) and are organized by graduate boards. Scientists from the Institute also take part in the work of these boards. The PhD programme at the IMG focuses on molecular, cell and developmental biology, immunology, genetics and virology. Every year, the IMG students organize their own scientific conference.

At present, approximately 50 pre-graduate and 100 graduate students are active at IMG. For them as well as for students from other institutes and universities, IMG organizes or co-organizes specialized courses, e.g. the annual course “Advances in Molecular Biology and Genetics” or microscopy courses. Those interested in the study programmes at IMG can also visit some selected laboratories during the “Open Days” organized every year by the Academy of Sciences at the beginning of November. PhD interviews are then held at the beginning of February.
