Bukovy potok with semi-neutral pH values and high concentrations of Fe is located close to the monitored Lesni potok catchment in National Protected Landscape - Voděradské bučiny (Voděradské beechstands).

The prevailing tree types in surrounding forests are European beech and Norway spruce. Average annual precipitation is approx. 660 mm, the area is typical with high evapotranspiration approx. 80%. The mean annual temperature in the area is 9.9oC  ranging from 1.6oC in December to 17.9oC in July. The temperature of the water ranges from 2.0oC in December to 14.4oC in July.

The iron precipitate mats form usually in period from April to November. The iron (Fe) mats form on a gradient between reduced and oxidized environment. The water from the base of marches (reduced environment) emerges to the surface and the iron Fe2+ oxidizes to iron Fe3+. Such environment is favorable for the iron oxidizing bacteria (FeOB). The FeOB found at Bukovy potok are Leptothrix sp. and Gallionella sp.

Leptothrix sp. filaments from the Voderadske buciny have diameters ~1.0 - 1.5 mm, and their length usually ranged between 5 and 100 mm. These filaments were mostly linear, slightly bent or crimped.

Gallionella is forming stalk like or twisted chains. The iron precipitates in areas with prevailing Gallionella sp. are cinnamon-like dark brown color.
