Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Photonics for Biosensing

The Institute of Photonics and Electronics v. v. i., in accordance with the Act No. 283/1992 of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, as amended by the Act No. 420/2005, and in accordance with the Statutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the field of Photonics for Biosensing.

Responsibilities and tasks

The selected candidate will carry out research into optical methods and measurement systems for plasmonic biosensors. Specifically, the selected candidate will be expected to develop advanced optical platforms based on plasmonic (nano)structures for affinity biosensing and participate in their applications for the detection of biomolecules and investigation of biomolecular interactions related to medical diagnostics.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in optics, optoelectronics, physics, electrical engineering or similar,
  • publication record in the field of optical measurement methods, optical systems, waveguide optics and/or plasmonics, and optical (bio)sensing,
  • experience in the design and experimental development of advanced optical platforms.

Terms of employment

Job description:

The open positions are part of the research team at the recently established Department of Nanocatalysis within the J. Heyrovský Chair project, which is focusing on the catalytic properties of supported atomic clusters designed with atomic precision of size and composition. The new team members will be involved in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data, and publication of results. Primary focus of these positions is on the synthesis of metal and oxide clusters in the gas phase in vacuum, and their deposition on substrates. Work may include studies of the catalytic properties of supported clusters and the characterization of the catalysts. These positions are especially well suited for researchers with experience with vacuum techniques and gas-phase ions.

General requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering or a related field
  • good written and oral communication skills in English.

Specific requirements:

  • experience with mass spectrometers;
  • experience with high-vacuum equipment;
  • experience with ionic clusters a plus;
  • experience with studies of the reactivity of clusters or their characterization a plus.

Expected start of the positions: 1. 1. 2020 or upon mutual agreement
Duration of the jobs: up to 42 months

Job description:

The open positions are part of the research team at the recently established Department of Nanocatalysis within the J. Heyrovský Chair project, which is focusing on the synthesis and catalytic properties of supported clusters fabricated with atomically precise size and composition. The successful candidates will be involved in all aspects of research, from data collection, analysis and interpretation of data, and publication of results. Primary focus of research will be on the testing of catalysts based on supported nanoclusters and the characterization of catalyst using state-of-the-art methods, including in situ / operando techniques. These positions are especially well suited for researchers with background in testing and characterization of model or industrial catalysts.

General requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field (excepted completion of PhD in 2019 is sufficient);
  • good written and oral communication skills in English.

Specific requirements:

  • experienced in the testing of catalysts;
  • experienced in the analysis of reaction products by mass spectrometry a plus;
  • experienced in the design and operation of custom equipment to test solid catalysts in gas phase reactions a plus.

Biostatistician position announcement

The new Bioinformatics department at Institute of Botany CAS (IBOT) (Průhonice, Czech Republic) has an opening for a new biostatistician/bioinformatician (either V1 research assistant or V4 associate scientist according to the candidate’s profile) position beginning in January 2020. The position is funded for 1 year with option for extension.

Our research focuses on the computational analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data generated by next-generation sequencing platforms from non-model plant species in order to address questions related to genome biology and population genomics.

Our team follows its independent lines of research, but also develops close collaborations with other IBOT and international experts on data intensive projects.

We are interested in a candidate familiar with inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches in phylogenetics, population genetics and ecology. The position also involves ad hoc supervision and the opportunity for participation in the development of a new scientific department. The successful candidate will also have opportunity to develop their own research ideas as they fit within the general research interests of our department.

Qualifications:

The qualified applicant will have a Master degree or Ph.D. in biostatistics, bioinformatics, machine learning, computer science, or botany. A strong background in statistics is essential. The candidate is required to have practical knowledge of next generation data processing in genomics and transcriptomics. The applicant should have experience with Linux/Unix, programming Python and R, high-performance computing frameworks and an interest in machine learning and distributed data processing frameworks (Hadoop, Apache Spark) and Scala programming.

We are particularly interested in candidates familiar with recent advances in gene flow research in macroevolution (polyploid and hybrid speciation) and microevolution (cross species hybridization and population gene flow). Previous experience with relevant models and methods is desirable. We seek a candidate with communication skills, ability to work independently as well as in a team and fluency in English. Personal suitability will be an important consideration.
