The library of the Institute of Archaeology of The Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno (ARUB) is registered at the Ministry of Culture as a basic library with a specialised holding. Since its foundation in 1943, it has been gathering information sources not only in archaeology, but also from related scientific disciplines. With approx. 50 000 volumes and an annual increase of 1 000 library units, the ARUB library handles now with one of the most important collections of this type in Czech Republic. Services are provided both as part of the institutional scientific facility, and also to users from other institutions (especially students, teachers and the professional public).
The library processes bibliographies for the Institute’s scientific workers. From 1993 in form of ticket catalogue cards and lately in electronic form into the ASEP system (Automtic System Evidence for Published Works by employees of the Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences).
The library undertakes all the work associated with the publishing activities of the Institute. This includes both Czech and foreign exchanges – as a main source of new publications and specialised journals.
The main aim nowadays is to transform the whole library holding into the electronic catologue, so that all classic and newly introduced services can be provided in electronic form. This activity is beeing supported by the AIS project. A further task is the digitalisation of all publications issued by the Institute or the rare and valuable pieces in the library holding.
