The project deals with fiber optic filters that are based on so-called long-period gratings (LPGs) made in active optical fibers. The gain should (in analogy with electronics) broaden amplitude and phase filtering capability, allow for tuning through the control of the optical gain, and increase functionality by integrating the amplification and filtering. The output of this project will be a thorough study of applicability of acitve LPG-based filters in various disciplines ranging form fiber optic communications through all-optical signal processing to fiber optic sensing. Selected structures will be realized experimentally and tested in the above-mentioned applications.
