The Department for the Study of Ancient and Medieval Thought promotes research into philosophy, logic and theology from the pre-Socratics to the early modern scholasticism. It does so from a variety of methodological standpoints ranging from intellectual history to systematic comparative studies in the analytic tradition. While the principal focus of the department is on specialised, internationally acknowledged research in its field, it is also committed to promoting domestic culture through translation projects and public lectures. The department consists of four research groups. These teams are defined by their focus and activities, not personally. The head of the department is Petr Dvořák and each team has its own coordinator:
1. Team for Ancient Philosophy (Mikeš)
2. Team for Translations and Editions of Medieval Philosophical and Theological Texts (TRANSED) (Blažek)
3. Team for the Study of Late Scholasticism (Heider)
4. Collegium Europaeum (Hlaváček)
