Is religiosity truly re-emerging in post-secular Europe? This question, as well as the attempts of formulating convincing answers, have been haunting social scientists for at least three decades now.
The aim of this talk is not to propose or present a new paradigm, but rather discuss the existing ones against the speaker’s empirical evidence, based on his own historical and anthropological research into correlated topics.
Theoretically, concepts of “secularisation”, “re-enchantment”, and “post-secularism” will be put under scrutiny and their heuristic soundness and utility questioned.
Thematically, new forms or re-enacted forms of religiosity (new religious movements, alternative spiritualities, native or folk cults) will be given the priority over others.
Geopolitically, special attention will be lent to post-socialist contexts (the s.c. Visegrád countries for instance), which have been the object of the scholarly “post-socialist religious question”. Other European contexts will also, of course, be evoked and discussed.
The participation of the audience will be both welcomed and expected.
Dr. Alessandro Testa is a Research Fellow in Anthropology at the Institute of Sociological Studies, Charles University. Trained in History, Ethnology, and Religious Studies, in the last fifteen years he has studied, worked, or undertaken ethnographic fieldwork for long periods in Italy, France, Estonia, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Spain (Catalonia). His publications include 3 books, 3 edited volumes, some 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals and chapters in volumes, and more than 100 talks and conference presentations in some 20 countries.
