We are happy to announce that with the beginning of the New Year Sergey Slobodyan has assumed leadership of CERGE-EI. He takes the lead from Michal Kejak, who served as CERGE-EI Director for the last five years.
"CERGE-EI is a wonderful institution that has been providing the best economic research and education in Central and Eastern Europe for more than a quarter of a century. My task will be to build on that history and bring CERGE-EI to new heights of achievement. The newly opened EU-accredited MA program is going to increase our impact on the next generation of policymakers and business leaders in the region," said Slobodyan.
Sergey Slobodyan has been a Citigroup Endowment Associate Professor with tenure at CERGE-EI (under US permanent charter) since 2011 and a member of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of CERGE-EI since 2009.
Prior to this he was an Assistant Professor at CERGE, Charles University and a Researcher at the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences from 2000.
From September 2012 to August 2015 he served as Deputy Director for Graduate Studies at CERGE-EI. From 2015 to 2018 he was also chair of the department of economics at the Higher School of Economics, St Petersburg, Russia.
He received his M.Sc. in Physics from Novosibirsk State University in 1988, later an M.A. in Economics from Washington University in 1996, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University in 2000.
He has taught economics in St. Louis, Prague, Frankfurt, Kiev, Novosibirsk, and St Petersburg, and educated students who now work in, among other places, Canada, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. He has consulted at the National Bank of Belgium and the Ministry of Finance of Armenia. He started his academic career at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Novosibirsk.
