In order to admit a Bachelor student into the US PhD program, CERGE-EI requires the applicant to simultaneously apply for the Master in Economic Research program to be able to directly enrol into the US PhD study track. This is in accordance with the Czech Higher Education Act 1998, s 48(3): ‘Admission to a Doctoral degree programme is conditional on the completion of studies in a Master’s degree programme.'
The Master in Economic Research program (fully accredited in the Czech Republic under the Charles University in Prague) is designed for the Bachelor students with outstanding academic skills who are interested in entering the US PhD program at CERGE-EI. It is an integrated part of the US PhD program, and the BA applicant will study alongside the other PhD students who already posses the MA degree.
The US PhD program at CERGE-EI has a standard US-type integrated MA/PhD curriculum that consists of two years of coursework, followed by a period of supervised PhD dissertation research. MA diploma (Czech and US) is awarded after the successful completion of the first two years of coursework. Eligible students then automatically continue with the research phase towards the PhD degree (Czech and US).
