Almost four hundred years after its appearance, the Cartesian circle remains an unresolved riddle. While numerous interpretations have been provided, especially in the 20th century, none of them has found any broader acceptance. This new attempt to handle the old problem is being undertaken exclusively in order to provide yet another perspective and keep up the hope that we may actually avoid the vicious circle while simultaneously demonstrating the cogency of the Cartesian argument. (This contribution is also meant to be a critical analysis of Gary Hatfield’s survey of the different solutions to this problem in The Blackwell Guide to Descartes’ Meditations [2006].)
