Open House Days
On weekdays, we offer afternoon blocks combining lectures and tours relating to specific topics. On Thursday and Friday, we organize tours for schools, and on Saturday we open our doors to the general public.
The program also includes other lectures by our scientists given at the Czech Academy of Sciences.
Monday, 11 November 2019 – On the instruments, people, and history of Mass spectrometry (afternoon block)
The lecture will explain the history of mass spectrometry, one of the most important techniques of contemporary analytical chemistry. Mass spectrometry plays an irreplaceable role in medicine, forensic practice, in the control of food and environmental components, the exploration of space objects and the dating of historical artifacts. It utilizes very accurate "weighing" of charged particles that are formed from a sample in a process called ionization.
- 5:00 p.m. Josef Cvačka – On the instruments, people, and history of Mass spectrometry (lecture and guided tour)
Tuesday, 12 November 2019 – Science and Society (afternoon block)
A block of lectures and tours of laboratories specializing in the practical function of science in today’s society. The first lecture will examine the path of drug discovery, from the very first idea of a single scientist to the sale of an effective drug in the pharmacy. The second lecture will focus on science as an investment opportunity as well as on the matter of potential risks in scientific research.
- 4:30 p.m. Viktor Kolman – Drug Development
- 5:15 p.m. Miloslav Polášek – Science and Economics
Wednesday, 13 November 2019 – Viruses, Bacteria, and Science (afternoon block)
A block of lectures and tours focusing on viral and bacterial research at our institute. We’ll explain how antibiotics and antivirotics work, what causes resistance to them, why there’s still no drug for certain viral and bacterial illnesses, and how our scientists are responding.
- 5 p.m. Dominik Rejman – How to Avoid the Postantibiotic Era
- 5:50 p.m. Marcela Pávová – Virus: Friend or Foe?
Thursday, 14 November 2019 – Open House Day for schools
Tours and lectures for students 13 years of age and up (from 8th grade elementary school).
Friday, 15 November 2019 – Special program for groups of deaf students
Tours and lectures for groups of deaf students. Groups should register no later than October 15.
Saturday, 16 November 2019 – Open House Day for the general public
Throughout the Open House Day at IOCB, there will be tours and presentations, during which our research groups will describe their projects as well as some of the interesting instruments and technologies they use. These presentations are intended for visitors 13 years of age and up, and advance registration is not necessary. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we’ll have interpreters on hand for deaf visitors translating into the Czech sign language or written Czech.
Moreover, we’re also preparing chemistry workshops for small children. Due to limited capacity, advance registration is necessary for this part of the program.
In October, we’ll be posting a detailed program and information on registration for the children’s events.
