About the Practical Course

Super-resolution light microscopy (SRLM) is a dynamically evolving field of biomedical sciences. Therefore, the main goal of this course is to teach in-depth practical understanding of key SRLM methods and to enable the participants to apply the appropriate type of SRLM in their own research projects in the future.

The focus of this EMBO Practical Course will be on the practical aspects, complemented by theoretical lectures, which will introduce basic concepts of optics and their relation to SRLM methods. The practical application of SRLM will be demonstrated by presentations of ongoing scientific projects presented by leading scientists in the field.

During this EMBO Practical Course, attendees will be theoretically introduced to the main SR approaches: Single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM), Structured illumination microscopy (SIM), Stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy and high resolution computational methods like SRRF or optical reassignment. Attendees will be practically trained on state-of-the-art systems covering almost all theoretical lectures, including the newest STED or SIM based techniques.

Vivid social interaction between students, lecturers and instructors will be secured during the whole course. Our goal is that participants will leave equipped with in-depth technical know-how related to SRLM, as well as with valuable contacts to the SRLM community.

Payment

Bank transfer

After the selection process, the invoice will be sent together with the positive decision. In the invoice, there will be all necessary payment details for the transaction.

Selection criteria

  • A motivation letter that describes the expected impact of the acquired knowledge. It should show how the new techniques would further ongoing projects or help to adapt the techniques to the imaging facility.
  • A short structured CV including the registrant's scientific/professional history, a brief description of their experiences in the light microscopy field, and the techniques routinely used in microsocpy.
  • Poster abstract: description of their own scientific project(s).

The important criteria will be the motivation and expectations from which we can estimate a potential impact of the course to the projects or carrier of the candidate.

Abstract guidelines

The abstract will be accepted in English language.

The abstract describes the project and/or should clarify the methodical approach, mainly the methods of microscopy.

In cases where the candidate does not have a scientific project (facility staff or company members), the poster abstract should describe ongoing techniques or approaches frequently used in their lab.

The limit is 400 words.

Poster specifications

Maximal dimension for the poster is A0: height 841mm, width 1189 mm.

Travel grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for travel grants for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a travel grant. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants page.

Child care grant

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.
