There is increasing evidence of the backsliding of democracy in the CEE region. One of the key reasons behind is the slow progress in the fight of systemic (political) corruption. At the same time, scholars have argued that the void between the representative democracies and the citizens is on a rise, further fueling the quality of democratic legitimation processes. My key research interest is focused on the democratization processes in the CEE countries and the balance between executive and legislative power. My PhD research project aims to examine whether, in the absence of democratic accountability and effective exercise of the normative oversight powers of the national parliaments, the nation-states are failing to strengthen their institutional integrity pillars that can prevent corruption and break the patters of institutional social traps. In this regard, my PhD project aims to answer how the process of legitimation of anti-corruption strategies through the representative democracies affects the quality of democratisation on the nation-state level and the EU legitimacy.
