Workshop - The nexus between democracy, collective identity formation and enlargement

9. 2. 2011

The workshop will take place at the Academic Conference Center, Prague 1, Husova 4a on 6th -7th May 2011

The purpose of the workshop is to present and discuss the final results and theoretical contributions of the WP8 of the project “Identity Formation and Enlargement”.

The focus of the workshop will be:

  1. to asses the interplay between democracy, collective identity (and its formation) and the enlargement and therefore to continue the debate on the link between democracy and requirements for identity within the various polity models;
  2. to discuss the various groups (minorities, women’s groups and students) and their role as 'agents of Europeanisation' at the level of collective identities in Europe;
  3. to answer the question what contribution does the CEE enlargement experience (from transformation to Europeanization) present to the formation of democratic European polity, This will also help to map the possible tensions between various levels of identification (local and regional, national and European) in CEE.

With the Workshop the major milestones will be discussed and reached such as establishing the link between democracy and prerequisites/requirements for identity within a post-national polity; establishing and assessing the connection between democracy, collective identity formation and EU Enlargement and mapping the strength and nature of tensions between the levels of identification: local and regional, national and European.
