On 11 December 2019 the European Commission presented The European Green Deal – a roadmap for making the EU's economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and making the transition just and inclusive for all. National, regional and local authorities, as well as civil society, industry and European citizens are expected to work together to achieve climate goals. By 2030, there should be 50 percent less greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990, and by 2050 the goal will be to be the first continent to be climate neutral.

Education, research and innovation are seen as essential elements to achieve the climate goals. Hence, the full range of Horizon Europe instruments will have to contribute to the research and innovation activities required by the Green Deal.

• 35 percent of the budget for Horizon Europe goes to climate-related research
• four of the five missions will be renamed 'Green Deal' missions
• a substantial part of the partnerships from Horizon will also focus on the climate challenges
• within the EIC funding will be made available to promising start-ups who can achieve groundbreaking 'Green Deal' innovation
