What is bioinformatics?
Bioinformatics is a combination of molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, statistics and computer science. It addresses a development of tools for storage, searching and retrieval of
biological data, but its main focus lies on an analysis and interpretation of biological data.
Simply expressed, bioinformatics is a biology in a computer.
Programme concept
To ensure a high quality of education the "Bioinformatics" programme is guaranteed by two Prague's universities (Institute of Chemical Technology ICT and Czech Technical University CTU) and by two institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic ASCR. While ICT offers education in natural sciences, Faculty of Information Technology CTU provides a tuition of computer science subjects. Two most important Prague's bioinformatics research groups from the ASCR then cover the whole scope of a contemporary bioinformatics.
What will you learn?
A goal of the study programme "Bioinformatics" is to educate a versatile expert capable of the analysis, processing and interpretation of life science data. Programme graduates will gain a deep knowledge in life sciences, especially in chemistry, molecular biology, mathematics and statistics. Informatics then represents a useful tool helping graduates to look for natural relations in living organisms.
...and what then?
Graduates of the "Bioinformatics" programme will be educated in chemistry and in molecular biology, and will gain knowledge from computer science and informatics, such as e.g. algorithm development and programming, operating systems, databases and computer networks. They will find employment in biological, chemical or biotechnology institutes, in agriculture or in chemical, food, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry and in health-care facilities.
