Jan Hus was a late medieval Czech university master and popular preacher who was condemned at the Council of Constance and burned at the stake as a heretic in 1415. Thanks to his contemporary influence and his posthumous fame in the Hussite movement and beyond, Hus has become one of the best known figures of the Czech past and one of the most prominent reformers of medieval Europe as a whole. Čeští a polští medievisté se v nich zamýšlejí nad fenomény předměstí, emigrace, sociální integrace, konfliktů mezi měšťany navzájem i mezi měšťany a jejich vrchností, konfesních poměrů ve městech, kariér nastupujících městských elit či dopadů zavádění účetních systémů do městského i rodinného podnikatelského hospodaření.

Die vernichtende Niederlage im vierten Kreuzzug gegen die böhmischen Hussiten im August 1431 zwang die Repräsentanten des Basler Konzils, Verhandlungen über die Bedingungen eines Friedens mit dem Ketzerland aufzunehmen. Da die drei Monate währenden öffentlichen Disputationen über die hussitischen Reformforderungen in Gestalt der sogenannten "Vier Prager Artikel" im April 1433 ohne eine abschließende Übereinkunft endeten, vereinbarten beide Seiten, die Verhandlungen in Prag fortzusetzen. Das erste Konzept der Übereinkünfte in Gestalt der Kompaktaten fand in Prag im November 1433 eine vorläufige Billigung, doch dauerte es noch weitere drei Jahre, ehe die Kompaktaten im Juli 1436 in Iglau (Jihlava) feierlich verkündet werden konnten.
František Šmahel widmet sich in seiner Untersuchung einer umfassenden Analyse von Konzipierung, Beurkundung und Ratifizierung des Konkordats zwischen dem hussitischen Böhmen und dem Basler Konzil. Die beigefügte lateinische Ausgabe ad usum scholarum bietet die wörtliche Fassung jener zehn Urkunden, die sich als die eigentlichen Kompaktaten zwischen dem Basler Konzil und dem Generallandtag der Länder der Böhmischen Krone bezeichnen lassen.
