Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the field of Functional Coatings for Optical Affinity Biosensors

The Institute of Photonics and Electronics v. v. i., in accordance with the Act No. 283/1992 of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, as amended by the Act No. 420/2005, and in accordance with the Statutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position focusing on the development of functional coatings for affinity optical biosensors.

Our research team Optical Biosensors (team leader Prof. Jiří Homola) is currently looking for postdoc research fellow focusing on the development of functional coatings for optical affinity biosensors.

Do you want to use your knowledge and experience in the preparation of functional materials and coatings? Do you want to develop advanced surfaces for investigation of molecular systems, medical diagnostics or environmental monitoring? Are you enthusiastic about multidisciplinary projects in which you can work closely with experts from various disciplines (chemistry, biology, photonics, or microfluidics) and develop new optical biosensors? Job description 

The selected candidate will carry out research and development of functional coatings for optical affinity biosensors. 

 

Specific tasks include: 

  • development of advanced functional surfaces (e.g. based on zwitterionic polymers or photoactivatable systems) for affinity biosensors based on photonic micro- and nano-structures,
  • preparation and characterization of developed functional surfaces,
  • use of functional surfaces for the study of biomolecular interactions and detection of biomolecules related to medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring.

Requirements 

  • Ph. D. in organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or similar,
  • publication record in relevant field of material sciences,
  • experience in research and development of functional coatings for affinity biosensing is of advantage,
  • experience with the development and characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructures is of advantage.

Our research team Optical Biosensors (team leader Prof. Jiří Homola) is currently looking for a postdoc research fellow in the field of microfluidics

Do you want to use your theoretical knowledge of microfluidics as well as the ability to create microfluidic devices? Are you interested in projects in which you can work closely with experts in the fields of optics, photonics, chemistry or biology and contribute to the development of new optical biosensors? Are you eager to see your microfluidic systems being used in molecular biology or medical diagnostics? If your answer is yes, you should apply for this position!

 

Job description

The development of microfluidic systems for optical affinity biosensors based on surface plasmons.

 

Specific tasks include: 

  • modelling, design and implementation of microfluidic chips for the detection of biomolecules and cells and for the study of biomolecular interactions,
  • characterization of microfluidic chips and devices,
  • design and implementation of experiments and data analysis. 

Requirements

  • Ph. D. degree in engineering, chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, or in related field, 
  • experience in research and development of microfluidic systems,
  • experience in fabrication of microfluidic structures and devices, and knowledge of micro-/nanofabrication methods, 
  • publication record in the field of microfluidics,
  • experience in simulations and programming languages (e.g. Matlab),
  • experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is of advantage,
  • experience in collecting and analyzing affinity-based biosensor data is of advantage.

At the Bioelectrodynamics research team (Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Czech Academy of Sciences), we are looking for a highly motivated PhD student for an experimental work focused on exploring the electromagnetic field effects at the biomolecular scale and nano-scale. To that end, you will employ highly advanced single molecule characterization and imaging techniques. Your experimental work will be supported by computational theoretical predictions of your colleagues. Your results will contribute to the development of novel electromagnetic technologies for gentler and more effective biomedicine and bionanotechnology of the future. Practically, you will learn how to work with a wide variety of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. Furthermore, you will learn how to prepare various biological and biochemical samples. You will also learn how to work with advanced microscopy techniques and world-unique experimental set-ups. Besides, you will learn how to read, understand, and write scientific papers and also how to present your work at international conferences around the world. Requirements: 

  • Finished master’s degree or equivalent by February 2020 in biophysics, biochemistry, physical chemistry, biomedical engineering, molecular biology or similar with a strong interest in imaging and microscopy.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team-focused environment.
