The final monograph of a research project on "Return of Religion in the Public Space" is the first and only analyse of the divergent post-secularisation development of religion in the Czech Republic and Slovakia since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
This study explores the acquiescent response style (ARS) among respondents in the Czech Republic. To analyse ARS, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was employed and the response style (RS) was modelled as a latent variable. The RS factor in the CFA model must be validated by its relationship to education and age, i.e. proxies of cognitive ability. The two studies presented in this article use large amount of data as all available balanced batteries of items were analysed.
Severe material deprivation, a dimension of the poverty and social exclusion index, one of Europe 2020 Strategy headline indicators, is defined as enforced lack of at least four of nine specific items. Proposals for modifications in the indicator include the Material and Social Deprivation indicator which is based on an updated set of thirteen items, whereas the choice of the threshold was data-driven.
This book studies political leadership at the local level, based on data from a survey of the mayors of cities of more than 10,000 inhabitants in 29 European countries carried out between 2014 and 2016. The book compares these results with those of a similar survey conducted ten years ago.
The primary objective of this study was to analyse the development of the effect of the bachelor’s and master’s tertiary degree on both respondents’ wage and socioeconomic status in the Czech labour market ten years after the Bologna Process. For the purposes
Since the concept of ‘local biologies’ was proposed in the 1990s, it has been used to examine biosocial processes that transform human bodies in similar and different ways around the globe. This paper explores understandings of biosocial differentiation and convergence in the case of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the Czech Republic.
Energy production and energy facilities and projects are based on scientific knowledge and they require employment of various kinds of technologies. This links energy development with a more general view of natural sciences and technologies and their function in contemporary advanced societies. The impact of technologies on everyday lives of individuals, groups and communities has been growing unprecedentedly in recent decades.
As people living in the EU states we take it for granted that a source of electricity will be there whenever we need it. It is a considerably less self-evident matter, how the electricity we rely on is supposed to be produced and distributed. The energy sector stands at a crossroads today and newly emerging options of energy strategies challenge the old ways of doing the business.
Schutz’s concept of intersubjectivity departs from radical, philosophical analyses of the constitution of the other (alter ego) in my consciousness. Instead, he takes the existence of the other and his or her subjectivity for granted and investigates the intersubjective relations of understanding and action among individuals. The shifting of phenomenological lifeworld theory from philosophy to sociology enables Schütz to study social interaction and order.
The chapter presents the development of the position of leisure and work in the value system of the population of the Czech and Slovak Republics between 1991 and 2017, then focuses on the selected characteristics of leisure and work in more detail and shows how many hours the inhabitants of the Czech and Slovak Republics spend at work, how their work affects their personal and family life and whether they have enough time for their hobbies and interests.
