Completed project

The application of philosophical hermeneutics to the sociological theory of intersubjectivity

Project duration:
2015 - 2017

The project is conceived as an interdisciplinary theoretical research on the border between philosophy and sociology with implications for the economic theory of action. Key objectives of the project are: a) analysing and linking up theories of intersubjectivity in modern (G. Simmel, A. Schütz, H. Blumer, E. Goffman) and contemporary sociology (J. Habermas, A. Giddens); b) applying selected concepts of philosophical hermeneutics (esp. H.-G. Gadamer and P. Ricoeur) to the sociological theory of intersubjectivity; c) identifying implications of the analysis for the sociological and economic theory of action. On the one hand, the project will examine sociological theory in relation to contemporary hermeneutical theory of understanding; on the other hand, it will represent an important supplement to the philosophical research on the relation between understanding and action, including the analyses of social interaction and collective action.

This book is a contribution to general social theory. The arguments herein are guided by two interests. On the one hand is the interest in the topic of intersubjectivity in sociology. Research on the intersubjectivity of understanding, which is the precondition for the coordination of action among individuals, offers an alternative to the frequently discussed dilemma of individualism versus holism. On the other hand, there is the interest in hermeneutics as studied in philosophy.

This article deals with the recent interest shown by critical realists in the study of generative mechanisms in sociology and proposes stronger integration of hermeneutics into this theoretical approach. There are important differences between realism and hermeneutics. While realism strives to overcome the extremes of empiricism and interpretivism with a new version of naturalism, hermeneutics bases its explanations of society on research into meanings.

Schutz’s concept of intersubjectivity departs from radical, philosophical analyses of the constitution of the other (alter ego) in my consciousness. Instead, he takes the existence of the other and his or her subjectivity for granted and investigates the intersubjective relations of understanding and action among individuals. The shifting of phenomenological lifeworld theory from philosophy to sociology enables Schütz to study social interaction and order.
