About the Archive

ilustrační 10 2018

The archive of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno, v.v.i. (IAB) was established with the foundation of the Brno branch of the State Institute of Archaeology in 1942. It is a specialist archive that collects information obtained from archaeological excavations carried out in Moravia and Silesia. At present it houses approximately 170,000 archived materials.

The largest part of the archive contains archived reports (announcements, site reports, expert opinions and similar documents), photographs (negatives, diapositives, photographs), plans and maps. Another part of the archive is devoted to the inheritances and personal collections of amateur and professional researchers. The archive also serves as a research infrastructure for the scientific community and students of history.

Recently the archive collection has been systematically digitised, a process that involves scanning older analogue materials and saving them as new, primarily digital documents. Due to the increasing volume of digital data and the requirements of administration and management, a central information system was created in 2009 called The Internet Database of Archaeological Fieldwork (IDAF; idav.cz/) and the Digital Archive and Archaeological Fieldwork Evidence for Moravia and Silesia (DAAFE). DAAEFE was a client-server desktop system operating on customised Megalit software. The platform served as a central database for the storage of all available documentation on archaeological excavations, assigning metadata to documents, making information accessible online searched via full-text and multi-criteria searches (depending on the level of authorisation) and securing document sharing. The Internet Database of Archaeological Fieldwork for Moravia and Silesia (IDAF; idav.cz/) served as a parallel online platform. The two systems were linked.
On 31st May 2017, the IDAF and DAAFE systems were locked for records and changes. Subsequently, the website of the Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic was officially launched.

The Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS CR)

The Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS CR) is a tool designed to integrate digital resources on Czech archaeology. Its main aim is to apply the information system of the Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic (AMCR) in practice, to enhance it and to link it to other data sources. The processing of databases for the territories of Moravia and Czech Silesia and their unification with already available databases from the territory of Bohemia plays a key part. AIS CR is listed in the Road Map of Large Czech Infrastructures for Research, Experimental Development and Innovation by the Czech Ministry of Education. In January 2016, the Institute of Archaeology AV CR, Brno began work on a project under the same name.

Within the framework of AIS CR, the Institute of Archaeology in Brno has been involved in the administration and development of the following projects:

Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic

AMCR is a software application that helps collect data on planned field-work, the archaeological excavations of various authorised organisations and the collection and publication of results. It is a direct continuation of the DAAFE information system. AMCR includes a retrospective database of archaeological excavations, finds and sites, an interactive map, a digital archive of field documentation and a set of biographical data.

On 1st January 2017, AMCR launched its agenda system for the submission of archaeological research documentation. All data and documents were transferred from its predecessor DAAFE, with incomplete data still being optimised. Archaeologists from authorised archaeological organisations do not need to create a new account. All they need to do is to apply for the renewal of a password via the AMČR home page (forgotten password).

AMCR Digital Archive

The AMCR Digital Archive is a web-based application for viewing digital documents stored by AMCR. It replaces the previous the Institute of Archaeology in Prague (IAP) and the Institute of Archaeology in Brno (IAB) digital archives. The interface is fully linked with AMCR and stores archived documents including related descriptive and spatial data. http://digiarchiv.amapa.cz/home

Archaeology OnlineArcheo-online 10 2018

The website is a source of digital information on previous archaeological discoveries in the Czech lands. The aim of the website is to provide users with access to hard-to-find data through existing infrastructures, record systems, tools and portals.

INDIHU - Development of Tools and Infrastructure for Digital Humanities

A project supported by Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic for the years 2016 – 2020. The main coordinator of the project is Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
The main aim of the project is to create necessary tools and infrastructure for scientific work in the humanities (such as history, philosophy, literature, etc.), which is based not according to the existing practices to analog documents, but to resources available in electronic form - for example, digitized documents, electronic databases or various collections of electronic data of a scientific nature that arise in academic work and are not effectively used yet or systematically interconnected.

Archaeology from the sky: Analysis and presentation of Moravian and Silesian remote sensing archives

A project supported by Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic for the years 2018 – 2022. The main coordinator of the project is Archaeological Heritage Institute, Brno.
Remote sensing belongs to the most important methods of obtaining information on archaeological sites and historical monuments. In the archaeological archives of Moravian and Silesian institutions, the thousands of aerial photographs and related technical data were accumulated during the last two decades but their standardized evaluation and digital deposition has not been implemented. The project aims to preserve the archive for the future (partial aim 1), to standardize methods of collection and processing of remote sensing data (2), to analyse the contents of aerial images (3), to review the selected sites in the field (4) and to make the archive available to experts and general public (5). Software applications of the Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS CR) will be used for processing of aerial photographs (AIS CR is becoming a unified platform for the management of archaeological data in the CR). The results of the project will be presented to the public via exhibition at the Moravian Museum and via a web application.

The Online Encyclopaedia of the History of Brno (IEDB)IEDB 10 2018

The Online Encyclopaedia of the History of Brno is a cultural information website. Co-designed by a team of specialists from leading scientific research, cultural and educational institutions in Brno, it serves as a database for encyclopaedic entries, providing users with information on different aspects of Brno’s history.

From 2010 to 2012, the IAB archive and library together with other archaeological institutions (mostly from Brno) participated in a project under the Education for Competitiveness Operational Programme as part of the Partnership and Networks Axis with the aim of creating a database that would map archaeological sites in the territories of Brno and Jihlava. IAB was actively involved in creating content for the encyclopaedia and adding expert information to the database. As part of the on-going development of the project, the archive continues to use its collections to expand the archaeology section, while the library provides citations from specialist archaeological publications for the literature section.

With the support of the Brno City Municipality, an archaeological map of Brno is currently being created for the archaeological section of the IEDB. The map is due to be launched in 2018.
