Preliminary Design Review of the COMPASS-U tokamak

An international workshop on the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) of the new COMPASS-U tokamak was held in days from March 31 to April 3, 2020.

During the workshop, our experts presented the current state of design of the individual tokamak systems to the international experts, including results of simulations and calculations. The International Expert Panel appreciated the progress made since the previous review (Conceptual Design Review in October 2018) and noted that all the main issues were resolved. The panel found no major showstoppers in the presented design and provided some useful recommendations for further action.

The workshop was planned with the personal participation of international and domestic experts, but due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop was carried out in full by videoconference. Not only foreign experts, but also more than 60 scientists and technicians of IPP joined in remotely. Although it was the first videoconference to such an extent organized in the IPP, thanks to the organizers it was without any entanglement and met all expectations. Our team has shown that despite difficult working conditions in the pandemic, scientific tasks can be successfully performed within the framework of cutting-edge international cooperation.
