Silicon detector testing

Department of Detector Development and Data Processing collaborates with other departments of Division 1 on the research of basic properties of matter. For this research we develop and test advanced detectors and operate computing infrastructure for data processing and storage.

The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (https://home.cern/science/accelerators/large-hadron-collider) in the European Particle Laboratory CERN (https://home.cern/ ) in Geneva is probably the best known project we participate in. We contributed to its design, fabrication, set-up from the beginning and now we participate in data taking and processing. The effort lead to Higgs boson discovery in 2012, which was later awarded by Nobel Prize to theoreticians which predicted its existence more than 50 years ago. Now we also participate in the upgrade of the ATLAS inner detector ITk by measuring sensors characteristics before and after radiation in our Laboratory for testing of silicon particle detectors. We also coordinate testing of these modules in particle beams.

We contributed to the design and construction of a huge neutrino detector NOvA in FERMILAB and now we coordinate data taking and we participate in data processing. We do simulations and tests on preproduction versions for another neutrino experiment DUNE (https://www.dunescience.org/).

SiPM detectors are tested in our smaller clean room. We also develop unique calibration system for calorimeters. Our significant contribution for Data Acquisition system for project CALICE is highly appreciated.
