ProteCHt2save.jpgProject title: Risk assessment and sustainable protection of Cultural Heritage in changing environment

Project acronym: ProteCHt2save
Start date: 01.07.2017 End date: 30.06.2020
Project budget: 2,15 million € ERDF funding: 1,79 million €
Operational program: Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE
Priority axis 3: Cooperating on natural and cultural resources for sustainable growth in CENTRAL EUROPE
Investigator:
Miloš Drdácký
The project ProteCHt2save joins together 10 partner institutions from 7 countries in order to find ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change and natural hazards on cultural heritage. The area of Central Europe is characterised by a high concentration of monuments, cultural districts and cultural heritage in need of protection. The climate change is one of the issues yet to be sufficiently addressed in this context - the disasters and catastrophes such as heavy rains, storms, floods or fires caused by droughts pose even now risks not only to the conservation of the cultural heritage assets with its cultural, historic and artistic values, but also to the safety of visitors, staff and local communities. Additionally they cause undoubtedly negative consequences for the local economies due to the loss of tourism revenues, and for the livelihoods of local people who are dependent on it.
ProteCHt2save primarily aims to develop feasible and tailored solutions for building resilience of cultural heritage to floods and events of heavy rain by applying an integrated and transnational comprehensive approach with the aim of implementing regional and local strategies on preparedness measures and evacuation plans in emergency. In addition to that, ProteCHt2save will also deliver ICT solutions (inventory and maps) and tools (decision support tool, best practices manual, handbook on transnational rescue procedures) for risk management and protection of cultural heritage in Central Europe. It will help regional and local authorities to prepare measures and evacuation plans in case of emergencies. Pilot actions will test the approach and tools in risk prone areas and areas with cultural heritage vulnerabilities to improve the existing disaster risk management plans and policies in municipalities. The input to adaptation policies of government organisations thereby promoting improved strategies and plans for the protection of cultural heritage will be ensured as major impact.
By the achievement of the planned objectives, ProteCHt2save is expected to proactively target the needs and requirements of stakeholders and policy makers responsible for disaster mitigation and safeguarding of cultural heritage assets, to ensure their closer cooperation and to foster the active involvement of citizens and local communities in the decision making process. As a result, a more sustainable and effective safeguarding and management of Central European cultural heritage is expected.
