Bohumil Frantál, Pavel Klapka, Tadeusz Siwek

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2012, 48(5): 833-858 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2012.48.5.02

The article deals with the issue of spatio-temporal human behaviour in the scope of the social sciences with increased attention to human geography. It endeavours to present possible approaches to the study of human behaviour in the geographical and social environment and the limits and constraints that affect behaviour. The article is inspired by the works of Swedish geographers, who were the first to introduce the time-dimension into geographical research, thus creating a four-dimensional framework for the research of behavioural geographical phenomena. The /authors' line of argument starts with the fundamental theoretical concepts and methodological...

Petr Rumpel

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2012, 48(5): 859-878 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2012.48.5.03

This article aims to contribute to the theoretical debate in the Czech Republic over the concept of shrinking cities and to draw attention to the potential of capturing the process of shrinkage by empirical means, taking the town of Ostrava as an example. The article sets out to explain the concept of shrinking cities, the causes, consequences, and context of shrinkage, and to put forth a theoretical framework with which to analyse shrinkage and to outline a proposed operationalisation of this concept. In its empirical section the article describes the characteristics of Ostrava, in particular population changes, and briefl y sums up the factors at...

Josef Kunc, Petr Tonev, Bohumil Frantál, Zdeněk Szczyrba

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2012, 48(5): 879-910 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2012.48.5.04

Economic and social changes since the year 1990 in the Czech Republic have been refl ected in the shopping habits of the population. Not only is the 'standard' form of everyday shopping for basic provisions at corner shops now typical, but so is daily visits to specialised retail chain stores or shopping centres. Such daily shopping trips are often combined with commuting to work and school or travelling for other services and have become an important factor in the daily lives of residents. This phenomenon has led to the formation of stronger links between inhabitants within a daily urban system. The primary intensity is observed not in the core-periphery...

Jakub Novák, Jana Temelová

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2012, 48(5): 911-938 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2012.48.5.05

The aim of the pilot study is to examine the possibilities of mobile phone location data in geographical research of the everyday life and individual spatial mobility of the population. Their daily activities and spatial mobility are explored and discussed against the everyday and geographical context of the young people´s lives. Theoretically the study draws on the strong tradition of time geography as well as on the new geography of everyday life. Methodologically...

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2012, 48(5): 939-964 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2012.48.5.06

The article presents an analysis of selected activities engaged in by seniors in the central areas of large Czech towns. The authors set out from the assumption that activities are a factor that animate the physical environment and, together with the actual quality of the physical environment, importantly contribute to the quality of life of seniors. The authors illustrate this on the basis of a sample survey conducted among seniors over the age of sixty living in fourteen large towns around the Czech Republic. The analysis shows that through the activities they engage in seniors are active participants in the rural environment. However, the intensity...

Czech Housing Estates: Factors of Stability and Future Development

Ondřej Špaček

Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review 2012, 48(5): 965-988 | DOI: 10.13060/00380288.2012.48.5.07

Housing estates are one of the most important legacies of the socialist regime and continue to infl uence the shape of Czech towns even today. Despite pessimistic predictions about their future in the early 1990s, they are still a widespread and valued type of housing. This article, unlike other primarily economically oriented studies, analyses the situation and possible future development of Czech housing states by combining three theoretical perspectives from urban sociology: social ecology, the political economy of place, and a culturalist perspective. A contributing factor to the stable situation of housing estates is the ambivalent relationship...
