Class, Cultural Capital, and the Mobile Phone

This article uses data from a representative survey on the applications of information and communication technologies to investigate the use of the mobile phone as a cultural object by different groups of respondents/consumers. The representative vs responsible government thesis of Peter Mair argues that one of the main causes of the weakening of democracy is the increasing tension between the representative and governance functions performed by parties. This article attempts to thoroughly map the cooperation between R. K. Merton and P. F. Lazars feld on communication research in the 1940s.
