OIKOYMENH Editorial Department
OIKOYMENH Publishing House (Oikoumenê) is an association for publishing in philosophy and theology. It is the only Czech publishing house directly linked to the samizdat publishing activities in the years of “normalization”. Founded by Ladislav Hejdánek and Aleš Havlíček, OIKOYMENH entered a free cultural space after 1989 with a program to publish classical philosophical and theological works and thus contribute to the restoration of spiritual life in our country. The publishing house soon gained a stable circle of loyal readers and over time it became one of the most important publishers of philosophical and theological literature in the Czech Republic. In 2007 it was awarded the Magnesia Litera Award for publishing a multi-volume history of philosophy series.
OIKOYMENH does not follow a commercial strategy when selecting titles. Its activities, professionally guaranteed by an editorial board composed of leading experts in the relevant field, are fundamentally non-profit, with an effort to be a service to the Czech public. The library of classic works produced by the publishing house, which now has more than 600 titles, can be considered without exaggeration a public good.
In 2017, a new OIKOYMENH editorial department was created at the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The OIKOYMENH editorial department is organizationally established as part of the Jan Patočka Archive; it shares with the existing independent association a joint editorial board appointed by the FLÚ director.
