The leading specialist in mediaeval pottery and its chronology, the origins of towns from the High Middle Ages, castles and fortifications from the 9th to 12th century and mediaeval archaeology in general. He has done a great deal to develop urban archaeology and is the co-founder of the Institute of Archaeological Monumental Care in Brno and the non-profit organisation o. p. s. Archaia Brno. 
 
He studied Archaeology and History at the Faculty of Arts of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Brno. He then went on to work for the Museum of Moravian Slovakia in Uherské Hradiště, from 1983 for the Institute of Archaeology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Brno, as well as for the Institute of Archaeological Monumental Care in Brno and the non-profit organisation o. p. s. Archaia Brno; he also lectures at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Brno and the Faculty of Arts of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. He has headed a number of research projects in urban parts of Moravian towns and cities, particularly in Brno, Uherské Hradiště, Přerov, Uherský Brod and Olomouc. He has been the project leader for a series of grant projects.
