The leading specialist in the Palaeolithic, palaeoanthropology and Quaternary geology. He has headed the famous research at Dolní Věstonice – Pavlov and in other important Palaeolithic localities (Stránská skála, Předmostí u Přerova, Petřkovice). He is a prominent figure in international scientific teams and is also a university lecturer.
He studied Archaeology and History at Charles University, then went on to study Geology at the Université de Provence in Marseille. He first worked at the Anthropos Institute of the Moravian Museum; since 1981 he has worked at the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno, where he was head of the Centre for Palaeolithic and Palaeoethnological Research and the research base in Dolní Věstonice. In 2010-2019 he was a director of the Institute of Anthropology of the Faculty of Natural Science, Masaryk University. The results of his numerous research projects, many of which have been abroad (Sahara, Siberia, Tierra del Fuego, etc.), have been published in 380 essays and 30 monographs. He was the editor of the series of monographs entitled Dolnověstonické studie (Dolní Věstonice Studies), and a member of the editorial boards of a number of international magazines and scientific committees.
