After studying Archaeology at the University of Brno, in 1959 he joined the Institute of Archaeology, where from 1981 he headed the Centre for Research into the Roman Period and the Migration Period. From 1990 to 1998 he was the Institute Director. He is involved in a number of international projects, has helped to prepare many exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, and has lectured at universities. He is the author of six monographs and more than 170 specialised articles and publications. He is a corresponding and honourable member of a number of European archaeological institutions (such as the German Institute of Archaeology; the Austrian Academy of Sciences; the Austrian Institute of Archaeology; the Polish Archaeological Society; Conseil Permanent de l´Union internationale des Sciences Préhistoriques). 
 
A leading specialist in the Roman Period (particularly in the sphere relations between Rome and the Germanic tribes) and in the archaeology of the provinces of late antiquity; the doyen of study of the Migration Period in Moravia. He is responsible for renewing and heading research into the Roman site of Mušov in the 1980s and 1990s.
